It can be quite heartbreaking to have a memento or heirloom be destroyed. Whether it is an accident or if someone intentionally breaks something you treasure, the loss can weigh heavy on the heart. Your breakable items become much more susceptible to becoming ruined when moving. Of course, packing your breakable items in a safe and secure manner will give you the best measure of preventing any breaks.
For small items such as glass, plates, mirrors, or other similar items, you will want to make use of newspaper. Wrapping these items in newspaper will absorb possible impacts and ensure that the item remains intact. If the item does become cracked or broken, then the newspaper also acts as a net to keep the pieces of the item together in case it can be fixed. These items will also need a little extra care when being placed into a box. Take a towel or bubble wrap and line the box. As you place items into the box, be sure to separate the layers with additional towels or bubble wrap to ensure maximum protection. Also make certain that you label any boxes like this as fragile and load them up where they will not move, fall, or have anything slam into them to prevent damage as well.
Larger mirrors and other items will need to be wrapped with bubble wrap or a large blanket. You also will want to cover the glass areas with cloth or newspaper to prevent anything from scratching or damaging the surface. Make sure that after the item is wrapped, use newspaper or more bubble wrap to fill in any air pockets for extra protection. If it can be done, try to transport these larger items separately from your other belongings or placing them in such a way that no damage will come to them. Just like your fragile boxes, load them onto your truck in a spot where they won’t slide or shift into other items, and keep other items from damaging your fragile goods.
Properly packaging fragile items will prevent them from breaking and also ensure that they survive the trip to your new home intact. If something should happen to break, then the wrapping you used can catch the pieces of items. This not only lets you keep all the pieces for repair, but keeps the smaller pieces of glass and ceramic from getting loose and causing possible cuts. Always be sure to handle your fragile items gently as well, and label the items as fragile if you are using a moving service.
